At the 2022 VMAs, the artist revealed that instead of remastering her hits as expected, she was releasing her 10th album, Midnights.

Taylor Swift surprised her audience by first announcing new music and then gradually sharing more details throughout the release of Evermore and Folklore, a return to her classic method.

The songs

On September 21, Swift made light of her penchant for Easter eggs on TikTok. She produced a video series called Midnights Mayhem With Me, where she unveiled one song title at a time from her new album. The complete tracklist has now been announced.

On Oct. 13, Target released three bonus tracks: “Hits Different,” a strings version of “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” and a piano remix of “Sweet Nothing.”

On her latest album, Midnights, Taylor Swift looks inward to explore personal matters – a contrast from her last two albums. In the announcement post for this record, she described the stories contained within as “13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life”.

According to Taylor Swift, this album takes listeners on a roller coaster of emotions. Despite the ups and downs, if you stay true to yourself, you’ll find clarity when the clock strikes twelve.

Sticking with the theme, after introducing track three, “Anti-Hero,” she posted a featurette on Instagram to talk about how special this song is to her and referred to it as one of her best compositions.

In the video, she revealed her most vulnerable insecurities for the first time, feeling overwhelmed by all of her responsibilities and experiences.

She said that we should accept both our good and bad points in order to become our best selves, which is why she appreciates the song ‘Anti-Hero’ for its honesty.

In her subsequent video explanation, Swift shared how the album opener “Lavender Haze” was inspired by her six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn.

She referred to the “lavender haze” as an incredible sensation of being in a deep romantic love, and explained that when someone was engulfed by it, they would do their utmost to keep the state unmarred and not let anyone disturb their euphoria.

Taylor Swift commented: “In our time of extensive social media access, many people will have to face this, not only those who are high-profile. For instance, the rumors surrounding my six-year relationship had to be dodged, but we didn’t pay attention to them. Writing this track was my way of disregarding the gossip and preserving what was real. I hope everyone likes it.”

Taylor Swift stated that the feelings of falling in love is similar to seeing snow on the beach, which was featured in her fourth track “Snow”.

The 3 a.m. tracks

On October 21st, Taylor Swift pleased her fans by releasing seven new songs, which she referred to as the “3 a.m. tracks.”

“Surprise! I consider Midnights a whole concept album, demonstrating the 13 songs that expressed the alluring enigma of the late hour. Other songs were created as we searched for these vital 13 that I call 3am tracks,” she expressed in a post disclosing the news. “I have been ravenous to display more of our creative cycles with you, similar to how we do with From The Vault recordings. Therefore, here it is: 3am and I’m introducing them to you now.”

Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift return, joined by Aaron Dessner in the single “Midnights.” Known for his contributions in “The Great War,” “High Infidelity,” and “Would’ve, Could’ve Should’ve,” Dessner’s presence will please Folklore and Evermore fans.

Swift’s album is accessible via streaming on Spotify and Apple Music, plus available in physical media such as vinyl, CD, and cassette tape from her website. These come in four different colors: Moonstone Blue (standard), Jade Green, Blood Moon, and Mahogany.

Swift’s album is composed of 13 tracks, with a special cover art and disc artwork. There are marbled-color CD discs, and a lyric booklet containing unseen photos. Vinyl and CD versions of the album can be found in stores.

In the lead-up to the album release, Swift kept details close to her chest; however, she released a video of her and Antonoff’s collaboration on Midnights. This marked their sixth production partnership together, coming after 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore and Evermore.

Swift didn’t reveal any information about the genre of Midnights prior to its release. Afterward, it became clear that it is an upbeat pop album influenced by 1970s music.

Lyrics

Before releasing her album, Swift collaborated with Spotify to promote the songs by displaying lyrics on billboards all over the world, starting October 17th.

Sao Paulo commuters were welcomed by a billboard with the lines: “Just like clockwork, the dominoes cascaded in a line.” Meanwhile, Nashville showed: “Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room?” Lastly, Mexico City experienced message of: “Breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, breathe out.”

In an interview with Spotify, Taylor Swift shared the five things that inspired her Midnights album and kept her up at night. These were:

Album release plans

At the start of its launch week, Swift put out a promotional schedule for Midnights which included events that were going to take place following the release.

The release was out on Friday, October 21st.

A chaotic surprise is scheduled to occur at 3 a.m. Eastern Time.

The “Anti-Hero” music video and the #TSAntiHero Challenge will be dropped at 8 a.m. Eastern Time on YouTube Shorts.

Taylor Swift fans rejoice! She revealed that she created special music videos for select songs on her new album. She referred to them as “Midnight Music Movies.”

In the video, she mentioned that “[they] are music videos created to express the atmosphere of this album.” She then continued.
